Dr. Welle makes a good point, saying, " Everyone is a little bit racist or sexist." And its true. Most people undermine others without seeing that we had done it. Around the world today, you could see it in our jobs, schools, and homes. It follows us everywhere, which also brings up how we could be the ones that bring it up. Before you know it, people would be agreeing or disagreeing with you, causing a huge misunderstanding. An example that Farhad Manjo stated was "an interviewer asked a male and female manager who had recently begun sharing an office, 'Which one of you does the dishes?” This is an example of how people state things that they didn't intend to be harmful. In the end, someone did stand up for the two managers and exclaimed, " “Unconscious bias!”
Although we may be a little bias, he also states that " The more we make ourselves aware of the role our unconscious plays in our decision-making, and the more we try to force others to confront their biases, the greater the chance we have of overcoming our hidden preferences." Although this may be true, I believe that some people are aware but just doesn't care about how others see them as bias people. On the other hand, unconscious bias are everywhere ( Farhad Manjo states at the end of his article) and it would take a while to stop this habit. To make the conflict known may be enough to light a match in other companies who will hopefully follow googles lead.
I agree with what you said about people saying things they don't mean to be harmful and that "everyone is a little bit racist or sexist" as Farhad Majoo stated but I don't think that what Google did is enough to make other companies follow its lead. I personally believe its going to take a really long time for unconscious biases to completely go away and for people to realize that they're being unintentionally hurtful. Despite this, I agree with your response to the article for the most part.

ReplyDeleteI like how you stated that unconscious bias is always around us, whether it's intentional or not. I also agree that the first step to solving the gender inequality is to acknowledge the problem. It is important that after we understand the error in the work area, we need to work together in order to commit to the long process of resolving it.
ReplyDeleteI like that you used the quote "everyone is a little bit racist or sexist" and then you proceeded to add an example of how this is true, that came directly from the text. I also agree with your statement "some people are aware but just doesn't care about how others see them." I think this is a perfect way to sum up sexism within the higher standing tech workers. Many know that they will be frown upon for being sexist yet this unconscious bias is still at play.
